The Stanford Prison Experiment
This late 70s experiment became one of the most famous examples of scientific cruelty ever seen. In this experiment, volunteers were given the role of prisoners or officers. Officers had power, prisoners didn’t.
Scientists believed officers would begin abusing their power, which they did. After only a couple of days, ⅓ of the officers started to show sadistic behavior. People had to quit the experiment early due to emotional trauma and injuries.
The study was supposed to last a total of two weeks. The abuse prisoners suffered was so profound, they actually had to cut it short after six days out of concern for the “prisoners’” wellbeing
