The Aversion Experiments
South Africa was not a gay-friendly place back in the 1970s. Back then, South Africa was a place where being homosexual or transgendered would get you jailed or killed. The country was also home to one of the worst experiments ever done on trying to “reverse” homosexuality.
Military members caught being LGBT were sent to a place known as Ward 22. There, they would be chemically castrated, repeatedly electrocuted, and possibly given gender switching surgeries by force. Most surgeries were incomplete, and left victims with mutilated genitalia and hormone imbalances.
The doctor in charge was jailed for five years after he was caught sexually assaulting a man. Aside from that, no real punishment was ever doled out.
