Social media gives the impression of social interaction via virtual relationships, but it isn’t the same as speaking to someone face to face. There is still some debate about whether excessive cell phone use effects real world social skills, but many agree that connecting via social media lessen the quality of the connection. And while technology provides endless ways to connect, they very simply may not be as meaningful.

Likewise, even when we are out and about with friends, a majority of people admit to being on their devices during that time. One study revealed that having cell phones close and constantly checking them in a group setting affected the closeness, quality, and connection of the conversation at hand. Although social media appears to bring people together in the spirit of making the world a little smaller, it is actually isolating us more as individuals as we forget how to talk to real people.
